Bio-remediation of hydrocarbon-polluted soils
The existence of micro-organisms capable of feeding off hydrocarbons as a source of carbon is the basis for this line aimed at developing tools for cleaning up spills, industrial sludge or industrial equipment. The initial projects carried out on the spill from the sunken “Prestige” oil tanker have enabled the isolation of micro-organisms capable of eliminating contamination.
Degradation of plastics in composting systems
Plastic waste has become a serious threat for the environment due to its long-term presence and its resistance to degradation by environmental micro-organisms. We have isolated fungi capable of growing on media in which the only source of carbon is plastic, previously subjected to ultraviolet light and freezing.
