There are several research lines for application in the bio-energy sector.
Isolation of third-generation cellulase-type enzymes for obtaining bioethanol
A sub-collection of 800 lignolytic fungi are being analyzed in order to select enzymes with improved properties for the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass for bioethanol production.
Micro-algae that store a large amounts of polysaccharides to use in the production of bioethanol
This project consists in the selection of strains with high sugar content as the basis for fermentation using yeasts to produce bioethanol. Microalgal biomass could be a very efficient substrate for the production of ethanol, and will have similar advantages to microalgal biodiesel in terms of land usage and conversion efficiency.
